I have this same issue, I have confirmed with the mainline kernels that both 3.8.9 and 3.8.10 work properly. 3.8.8 and Ubuntu's 3.8.0-19 both give me a black screen. If I plug something into the display port then I get a login screen there, but there is no way of getting said login screen onto my laptop screen. Using a Dell XPS L322X with Intel HD 4000 graphics.
