Title:
nautilus 3.6 by default has no 'New Document' menu
Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
In nautilus 3.6, if there are no files in your Templates folder,
nautilus offers no 'New Document' menu option, which is very user-
unfriendly. This is obviously a regression since previously nautilus
always offered at least a menu option of "New Document / Empty
Document".
The workaround is to manually create a blank file in the Templates
folder, eg via the command "touch ~/Templates/Untitled\ Document".
However, this is not at all obvious since Gnome's template system is
completely unintuitive. Furthemore, nautilus then offers get two
options that rather inanely do the exactly same thing: one called
'Untitled Document' and one called 'Empty Document'.
The bug has been reported upstream to nautilus
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=687139) but gnome-devs
don't consider regressions or user-unfriendliness issues to be bugs
and have closed it as 'notabug'.
The best and most obvious solution would be to change the codebase
back to offer the 'New Document / Empty Document' menu if there is
nothing in Templates (ie like it used to do in every previous version
of nautilus), but as a workaround, perhaps an upgrade script could
check if ~/Templates is empty and create a blank file in there so that
at least users keep the New Document option that existed in previous
versions of Ubuntu.
Failing that, perhaps the release notes could note that a number of
useful features that have been removed in nautilus 3.6 and link to a
guide showing how to work around the problems where possible.
