I suspect the cause to be SNA: When using UXA, the problem goes away; it also disappears when using the XvPreferOverlay driver option together with SNA. The TearFree option also works with SNA, but introduces very visible juddering for not only video output, but also the whole Compiz desktop (when moving windows etc). Apart from the mentioned options, no X settings have been modified.
