Title:
[xorg-edgers] constant GPU hangs with recent xorg-video-intel

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  I'm using a mostly-stock Quantal install on a Dell Latitude E6410. If
I stick with mostly xorg-edgers packages plus the Quantal shipped
xserver-xorg-video-intel, I'm fine. If I upgrade to any of the xorg-
edgers Intel driver releases from the last... Three months? At least?
...I get anywhere from thirty minutes to a few hours of work done
before the GPU crashes repeatedly until it's declared "hung" and
reset. Then Cinnamon's toast, and so is the rest of my DE, and it's
time to zap the X server and restart the laptop.

I'd submit a bug with logs from an *actual* crash, but I've had to
disable apport entirely to stop it trying to process the GPU crash
information. *That* crashes the apport GPU sub-module.

Are there some known GPU crash / hang bugs re: the old Core i7-6x0
mobile CPUs? Something else going on? Do I need a newer kernel to
*not* get all these crashes? I see the last xorg-edgers 3.8 kernel
currently uploaded for Quantal failed to build for i386, and I'm not
being offered it through aptitude, so I'm very hesitant to pull down
the 3.8 packages and install them manually.
