I have the same issue, and have confirmed that I have full access via
SSH afterward, even though the mouse and keyboard are unresponsive.

Have the issue occurring intermintently on my Ubuntu 12.04 AMD64
computer, and also on my wife's Fedora 18 AMD64 computer (craigslist
purchases, quite different hardware).

Have had the issue occur under several different window managers,
including 3D, 2D and ultralight variations.

Anyway, I would be happy to pull and submit any logs, if someone can
point me to the right ones. :)

For anyone who finds this thread before we have a patch:
Rumor is that running Minecraft under Wine solves many issues. I will try it
next and report back. It may not help, since this seems to be unrelated to the
LWJGL Linux compatasbility issues. (LWJGL is up to date on both of my
computers).

Title:
complete freeze of Ubuntu after some time using Java, wine, games
  (GL?)

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Since I upgraded to 12.10, my computer freezes randomly after some time. If I
play Minecraft, it freezes after mac. 30min, if I use my computer normally it
only freezes after 1 hour or more. I think it never happened if I used Gnome or
Unity 2D (if I didn't play Minecraft there).
I can't use the mouse or get into the console with Ctrl+Alt+F1, so I have to
manually reboot the computer every time it freezes.
