This is however, not what the software expects, thus not useful at all. Cups expects the files to be in /usr/share/cups/locale/ll, in the file name format of cups_ll.po and in PO format[1]. The cups-common package ships the existing translations this way: http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/all/cups-common/filelist So, what we should do is: -stop distributing the .mo files -add cups to the https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NonLanguagePackTranslationDeadline page, and export translations before Maverick is out. [1]: seems that while cups uses the po format for translation, it does not use gettext for using the translations in the code, but reads directly the po files.
