Relatedly, the AucTeX package doesn't accept emacs24 as satisfying its
dependencies:

Title:
AucTeX doesn't get installed correctly with emacs 24

Status in “auctex” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  As reported in AskUbuntu
(http://askubuntu.com/questions/215641/auctex-in-12-04-ignores-emacs-24) the
AucTeX package in Ubuntu 12.04 doesn't get installed correctly for emacs 24. I
can confirm this for 12.10. As a result opening .tex files in emacs 24 will not
load auctex and the AucTeX menus (and other functionality) don't appear.
The solution ( a one digit addition to the install script) is also mentioned
in the askUbuntu thread.

Apparently Debian has already fixed this: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
  bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=683032

I am using the following version of the auctex package: 11.86-2ubuntu2
