Are you sure you weren't missing the bold font variant? In any case,
this isn't gtk's fault (more related to freetype/fontconfig) andthe
prorietary MS fonts can't be fixed by Ubuntu.

The bold weight of 'arial' gets really ugly and is stretched too much,
