Daniel, thank you a lot for the tip. Indeed, when I entered alsamixer,
it showed two playback devices, S/PDIF and S/PDIF 16.

The first on was showing a square wih '00' inside and the second was
showing 'MM' inside (see attached screenshot).

It always happen if you liveboot from ubuntu or do a fresh intall. (Same
thing does not happen with Linux Mint, which is strange - both devices
always come unmuted by default).

After a little struggle, I discovered that pressing 'm' on the keyboard
would change the status from 'MM' to '00' on the second playback device.
Then I started having sound. :)

So, apparently, it seems the problem is solved. It has worked with 13.04
default kernel and with the latest one from the default repos as of now
(3.8.0-19 #30), as long as I manually unmute the S/PDIF 16 after
installing Ubuntu.

But if I turn the computer off. When I turn it on again, although the
S/PDIF 16 comes unmuted, I must press the volume key on the monitor
(it's a LG All in one computer) to get the sound working. If I don't
press the volume key, there's no sound at all from the speakers.

On Windows 8 (that unfortunatelly came installed), it works without
having to press the volume key after turning the computer on.

Maybe the fact the S/PDIF 16 playback gets muted by default has
something to do with this 'volume key' issue. I don't know and any help
debugging it would be mostly appreciated.

Thanks a lot.
