Thanks Adam, looking to the upstream theme, we should add that to the
gedit.css shipped with the theme (it's in gnome-applications.css
upstream):

"
GeditViewFrame .gedit-search-slider .not-found {
    color: @error_fg_color;
    background-image: none;
    background-color: @error_bg_color;
}

GeditViewFrame .gedit-search-slider .not-found:selected {
    background-color: @theme_selected_bg_color;
    color: @theme_selected_fg_color;
}
"

(you can add it to /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-3.0/apps/gedit.css for
testing)

** Package changed: gedit (Ubuntu) => ubuntu-themes (Ubuntu)

Title:
  gedit find box background should turn red when text is not found

Status in Themes for Ubuntu:

Status in “ubuntu-themes” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  In gedit 3.8.2 in vanilla GNOME with Adwaita, the find box's
  background turns red when text is not found. This doesn't happen in
  Ubuntu with Ambiance. We probably need to add styling information to
  Ambiance to make this happen.
