I can reproduce this problem on my Dell Inspiron N5010. If I shutdown my
laptop and leave it in a cold room for a few hours, then it freezes at
the "Ubuntu" boot screen (with dots indicating progress). By letting it
stay on for a few minutes, forcing the power off, and then booting
again, I am able to boot.

  I installed Ubuntu 11.04 from the DVD.  I ran the system with 4 cpus at 100% 
for 24 hours.
  I use the windows 7 boot loader to select the OS to boot.
  I can boot windows 7 from disk0 partition 1 every time without fail
  Selecting Ubuntu always gets to the grub screen
