The input sound volume is set much too low. When I go into system settings / sound and check the volume, it barely registers unless the volume is turned up all the way. Then I get about 5 "bars" in my normal speaking voice. When I check the internal microphone, however, it is very sensitive, even when set only about halfway up. I get "bars" more than half the way up the scale. This is also confirmed by the application I am using. The sound quality is better than the internal speaker, but the volume is set much too low.
