Public bug reported:
I upgraded from 8.04.x-->10.04.x-->12.04.2 LTS, removed Unity (and
friends), installed Gnome and found /etc/shadow owned by root:root
(though I don't know exactly how it came to be)
This causes a problem because the lock screen will tell you that your
correct password is incorrect. The lock screen shouldn't tell you that
your correct password is incorrect (confusing lies). Instead it should
inform you /etc/shadow is owned by other-than root:shadow (helpful
truth).
** Affects: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
