Since I'm the original reporter and only subscriber I'll close this bug.

I'm using Gnome 3 for a year now and I don't really care for a feature
which would have been nice in Gnome 2.x anymore…

** No longer affects: gnome-applets

Title:
[multiload applet] Background can't be set to transparent

Status in “gnome-applets” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
I think it would be great to be able to choose transparency instead of
a specific color for background, free memory and cpu-status 'idle' in
the miltiload GNOME applet. Setting a background color similar to the
one used for the panel is no suitable workaround since at least in
some themes (like Ambience) color gradients are used.

  I'm using gnome-applets 2.32.1.1-0ubuntu5 on Ubuntu 11.04 with Gnome
  2.32.1
