I am new to linux and I can see this is quite a long post as well as that it hasn't been added to in some time, but I am experiencing this problem myself and I wondered if anyone can help. It seems random, but sometimes the shutdown and restart operations from within the GUI (Unity?) seem to perform a "Lock Screen" operation instead. Most of the time I am able to shutdown or restart no problem and when this happens I simply force the restart from a shell, but I would like to correct the issue if possible.
