Public bug reported:
When I first upgraded to 12.04 from 11.04 [via 11.10] the thumbnails
were just perfect. I think [not 100% sure] that once when I had to
reinstall grub to boot, all desktop icons except folders and LibraOffice
docs are represented by clocks - not thumbnails!?! I have tried a
variety of fixes I see posted, but NONE worked, so far. I fear that
endlessly trying repairs could damage the entire system and I'd have to
re-install [for me an extraordinary amount of work, given how my system
is set up!]. I see one other person who reported the exact same thing
happen when they re-installed grub, so wonder how and if that was the
problem and how to repair. I have tried to edit the gconf and the
settings in Nautilus and a few other 'tricks' suggested. None had any
effect and luckily none further damaged the system, as far as I can
determine...but I'm left with a horrible looking desktop and it is very
difficult to find photos without the thumbnails!
