No one has looked at this yet, but I should probably let you know that the serial cable was broken. I didn't have time to test what the state of each line was when this kernel panic occurs, I just replaced the serial cable and I have had no problems for several weeks. However, I would consider this kernel panic a bug. Bad serial cables should not cause the kernel to panic.

The ppp module is included in the distribution. I have a Keyspan USA-19HS USB-to-Serial adapter connected to a US Robotics 56k modem. The /etc/ppp/options file includes these three options: demand persist idle 60 Ppp connects to the ISP as expected and the remote host can be pinged. When the connection has been idle for 60 seconds, ppp attempts to close the USB device /dev/ttyUSB0 and a kernel panic occurs. Disconnecting the USB device before the timeout occurs causes pppd to terminate cleanly, but that defeats the "persist" option. Attached is a screen shot of kernel stack trace.
