I have installed the laest 3.11 kernel (3.11.0-999-generic #201307150405 SMP 
Mon Jul 15 08:06:42 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux) and so far there 
were no connection drops.
However i see these errors in syslog when the connection "freezes or stalls" 
for a while (no idea if it's related or not, just thought it might be worth to 
check):

  wifi packet loss on intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000

Bug description:
  Sat on a wifi network with another non-Linux machine nearby on the
  same access point. The Linux machine (Ubuntu 13.04 up to date) drops
  off the network repeatedly. Network manager shows a constant
  connection. mtr shows packet loss.
