Youtube videos play when embedded but not on youtube.com.

Bug description:
Cannot play videos on youtube.com. If I can find the same video
embedded on Facebook or elsewhere, it plays fine.
Videos on youtube.com load the first frame and do not play. Clicking
the play/pause button has no effect other than toggling the icon.
The problem does not affect Firefox.
I have installed ubuntu-restricted-extras, adobe-flashplugin, etc.
I have purged and re-installed adobe-flashplugin.
I can play videos locally after downloading them with youtube-dl but
this is inconvenient at best.
