I have the same problem : S/PDIF volume is extremely low.
However, if I select any other output (Headphones or Analog are the
options), no sound comes out of S/PDIF.

Title:
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio S/PDIF Out volume problems
Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
If I select digital S/PDIF output, the volume is very low. By maxing
the amp, sound comes out normal, but this is not convenient. If, on
the other hand, I select analog output, I surprisingly also get S/PDIF
output, now at normal volume level (aprox the same as other devices
connected to same amp). The system volume control, however, does
nothing until 15-0 % or so turns down and then mutes the volume
quickly.
Running the ubuntu-bug, the first playback test gives good output on
the stereo (via S/PDIF), but the second does not.
