I had the same problem on Ubuntu 13.04, and it solved after I uninstalled unity-webapps-facebookapps and unity-webapps-youtube

Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I turned on my computer today and immediately the screen started fading out like it was freezing and then coming back up and it did this several times. When the update manager appeared on the left side of the screen, I was not able to click on the manager to see the updates and instead had to right click on it and click install updates. I frequently have problems with a cursor not appearing. It happens at least three times a day where I have to either force the computer to shut down using the power button and when I can, click restart. I have been having problems since installing 11.04, but 11.10 is by far the worse.
