I had the same problem on Ubuntu 13.04, and it solved after I
uninstalled unity-webapps-facebookapps and unity-webapps-youtube

Title:
Firefox is freezing and the screen fades in and out.

Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have to say that by far, this upgrade to 11.10 is the worse yet.
Since upgrading from 11.04, which also had problems, I have had
nothing but problems. It remindes me of the days with Windows when my
computer was bogged down with spyware, cookies, viruses and what ever
  else was going on.

My screen freezes repeatedely and my computer runs choppy. I have to
reboot at least 3 times a day because I can't get a cursor. When I
open Libre Office documents it takes more than 10 seconds to open and
my computer sounds like it's on it's last leg struggling to open that
document. I am experiencing delayed typing, screens fading in and
out, the launcher sometimes not opening or not closing.

I write papers everyday and my computer is making tedious work a lot
more frustrating. I want to switch to another operating system, but I
have no idea as to which system to switch to. I love Ubuntu, but this
latest update makes me extremely frustrated and crying the way I did
  when I used Windows.

Is this a problem that can be fixed or do I really have to find and
  switch to another operating system?

  Thank you.
