  Thanks.
   I attempted to run the apport command from an alternate terminal during
 my last lockup, but was denied access due to a lack of an http referrer.
Not sure if this would work better if I were to try this from home, rather
than from work..

   I have a somewhat less-than-satisfactory workaround for the black screen:
   I can drop to a terminal, and run "unity --replace" twice. This trashes
access to ssh-agent for new shells, and re-arranges the desktop, but, at
least it leaves my currently running processes alone.
I'm actually running 12.04 LTS rather than 12.10
