On my hp elitebook 6930p refurbished laptop the internal mic is very quiet when recording. I set the alsamixer settings to full and unmuted and turned everything up including mic boost volume and still it is very quiet when recording. I have the gnome desktop with no effects as my active desktop and I am blind so I use the Orca Screen Reader and brltty for braille display support. I am considering getting a USB mic with headset for recording and chat.

During record and playback test the volume is really really low. A similar problem existed in earlier releases of Ubuntu (<10.10) and it was resolved by adding a line "options snd-hda-intel model=laptop" to alsa-base.conf file. However this does not work any more for the current 12.04 release.
