Aaron, the issue you're reporting is something different, please file a separate new bug report. We don't support just Unity but it does happen that people run into issues that don't get identified until after release, which is why it's good to file separate bugs for your own issue (and I'll mark as duplicate of another once that's ascertained).
This was fixed in Oneiric with the latest revisions of nm-applet, it works properly in xubuntu, ubuntu, even gnome shell.
