This works now in MuPDF and Firefox. Haven't tested Evince but I think I
did test it a while ago and it also worked.

Probably it was a bug in some underlying library since MuPDF didn't work
before either.

  Evince the pdf viewer is not displaying images with text consistently when

  I am using Ubuntu 10.10- the Maverick Meerkat and Evince Document Viewer 
2.32.0. I recently upgraded Ubuntu from 10.6 and evince was working fine before.
