I assume something went wrong here. Have you tried to do an "sudo apt-
get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" (if you have not done it by
yourself).

Gimp, invoked from the commandline with no arguments, fires this
assertion hundreds of times.

When I do a gaussian blur, I see several like this:

There is no evident malfunction of gimp except that a programmer from the
past is telling me that something is not as he thought it ought to be.
