emacs compare/merge window shrinks

Bug description:
start emacs with
emacs -Q file_a file_b
selects tools->comapre(ediff)->buffers
in the edif window that show up press ? for help.
The window now changes size so nothing is visible.
same thing happens when trying to use tools-> merge->buffers but then
ends in a segfault.
