Looks like a tiling bug - in particular you have a machine susceptible
to the L-shape tiling bug.

** Summary changed:

Title:
[gm45] Corrupted painting of window surfaces (L-shape tiling
  corruption?)

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Attached is an example of a problem behaviour of horizontal black
lines which affects Evince, Guadayeque and other programs on my
  desktop.

The corruption is progressive (when first opened, apps don't tend to
have the problem, happens on a per-window basis, (moving another
window over the area is not corrupted) and seems to permanently affect
certain in-memory glyphs (e.g. even after a restore and maximise, the
icons in some applications remain similarly corrupted).
