I'm having the exact same problem and this is making me nuts, when
switching to Stereo mode, the volume level can go a lot higher, but not
in 5.1 since the output volume is just the subwoofer which doesn't make
too much of a difference

Title:
Sound setting: Subwoofer and Output volume slide simultaneously

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have confirmed on both ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04
When I go to All Setting->Sound and on right side of analog output setting
and then
after I choose a mode 4.1, 5.1 or 7.1, when I slide either Subwoofer and
Output volume, they both slide simultaneously. Furthermore subwoofer is not
working properly or it works occasionaly but here I would like you to fix the
sliders.
