I don't know about your comments re amixer not 0% - the balance bar in
the gnome volume indicator is either hard left or hard right when i did
the tests.

Nevertheless, the test recording i used has only recording on the left channel, 
or the right channel. 
At those times it shouldn't matter where the balance is set, nothing should 
come out of the opposite channel and indeed it works correctly when i run these 
tests on my asus laptop using the same external speakers. 

The correct operation should beÖ
left channel recording plays with either balance left, or balance center but 
only from left speaker - there should be no right output
right channel recording plays with either balance right, or balance center but 
only from right speaker - there should be no left output

i am not sure what you want me to do with the code you put. i am new to
linux

Bug description:
  balance does work. when i move the balance to left, sound is louder on
  the left but can still be heard on right and vis-versa.

  Happens on my Ubuntu 13.04 install, and also the boot cd from lubuntu 13.10. 
  I don't have this problem if i plug the speakers into my laptop which uses 
alc663 chip.
