The problem was that .xinitrc/.xsessionrc was not run when using gdm so adding the lines xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0 xrandr --auto in /etc/gdm/Init/Default fixed the problem, but lead to other errors later. (I reported them as different errors as they aren't related to gdm - as far as I can tell)

After installing nvidia-319 drivers the gdm doesn't start properly. If I remove the nvidia drivers it works again. If I install nvidia-prime it connects to the screen when starting up with ligthdm (but there is graphical glitches), but does not connect with gdm.
