2 independent 16/24-bit S/PDIF TX Outputs supporting 16/20/24-bit,
48K/96K/44.1K/88.2KHz sample rate

- Coaxial / Optical S/PDIF out ports at back I/O

do your motherboard have any onboard hdmi connector or internal spdif
out header in addition to the coaxial spdif ?

you may need to use hda-jack-retask to change the pin default of node
0x2d from HDMI to optical spdif out

Title:
[System Product Name, VIA VT1828S, Black SPDIF Out, Rear Panel]
  Playback problem

Status in “alsa-driver” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Since upgrading to 13.10 no digital output is available. In the sound
settings there used to be an option "Digital Output" listed, but it is
not anymore since the upgrade. "aplay -l" still lists the digital
audio device. Analog audio still works fine.
