When a VPN connection is established while using a WIRELESS network connection, the network panel applet shows a tiny lock in the wireless connection icon indicating that a VPN connection is established. If connected to a WIRED network, the wired network icon does not show the lock to indicate that your VPN connection is active. You must navigate down the applet menu to see if your VPN connection is established.
