I had this issue when I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10. After login, I noticed that the my shutdown option didn't do anything, although I would get a prompt upon pressing the power button. Anyway, I performed a clean install of 13.10 (home is on a seperate partition and was left intact) and the problem went way. My shutdown option in Unity was back again and all was good... Until today, the Light Display Manager login came back. I applied the work around of adding lightdm to the hidden user with no effect. I read Mateusz's post (#22) and can confirm that I am experiencing the same issue. That last thing I installed was openjdk-7-doc yesterday. Strange...
