You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Pressing the volume up/down keys or play button doesn't adjust volume.
Previous Ubuntu versions would display a popup showing the current
volume, or a popup indicating that volume had just been muted. I'm not
sure if indicator-sound is the right package, but it seems the closest.
