Sorry forget that - even though I tried "apt-get remove ..." and re-install it 
still didn't work, but it turned out there were stale chromium processes left 
around even after the remove.
So "pgrep -f chromium | xargs kill -9" fixed it.

  After dist-upgrade nothing at all works - URLs typed in are ignored, no 
attempt to load web pages.
  Settings does nothing.
