Weird. My wife has just started getting this issue (so far 2 times in the last few weeks). The first time I restarted lightdm from a virtual console and it worked again. The second time (suspecting CAPS LOCK) it worked after 3 or 4 attempts (unfortunately the laptop doesn't indicate when caps lock is on/off).
