Problem appears to be PulseAudio. The following seems to solve the flash
problem:
in /etc/pulse/pulse-client.conf (PulseAudio client configuration file)
change
;autospawn=yes to ;autospawn no
(autospawn= Autospawn a PulseAudio daemon when needed. Takes a boolean
value, defaults to "yes". I assume that this means that ALSA and not
PulseAudio is being used, even though PulseAudio is standard in Ubuntu)

** No longer affects: flashplugin-nonfree (Ubuntu)

Bug description:
Mainly audio, video also to some extent affected. Occurs in Firefox
and Chromium. Origin probably in a kernal update, as installation of
13.10 was without problems. Various solutions tried, none work, quite
exasperating, as this not the first time problems with pulseaudio.
