I think my system is suffering with the same (or similar) issue. The
symptom is that during normal use (Ubuntu 13.10) the system will lock
up. The mouse can still be moved but I can't click on any open
applications. The sound services will continue to operate (seemingly in
the background). Then I wait for about 10 to 20 seconds and the windows
will kind of go nuts (and that's a technical term!) flashing all the
windows up seemingly in a random order until it finally shows just the
wall paper (background) and then settles down with a crash report. At
that point, the system is either completely back to normal, or partially
OK (the missing aspect being the menu bars of all open applications - in
which case a re-boot is necessary).

The system is running a dual Intel CPUs (E2220 - 2.4GHz) with an Nvidia
GeForce 7100 graphics card. It's a 64-bit install with 4.7Gb RAM.

I have already installed the current nvidia drivers and tried to remove
nouveau but that seemed to have already been removed.

The crash report states:

ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/compiz
ProcCmdline: compiz
Title: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV
ApportVersion: 2.12.5-0ubuntu2.2

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-nouveau” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I have recently, re-installed fresh ubuntu 13.10 distribution release.
But everything worked fine. until recently i had strange problem of my
display screen getting freezed randomly; but no response to either
mouse/keyboard.
But i want to point it out; it happens randomly and is not specific ?
Other day, i had music player playing in background, but screen freezed. but
my music was still running.
Kindly note, i used multiple monitor setup and same issue of screen freeze
also cropped up.

I,am not sure, whether it is bug ?

  thanks for the expertise support.
