Benedict Holland, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .
If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p xorg REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER Thank you for your understanding. The problem (I think) is happening in step 6. I don't think this is an xorg bug but I don't know what package this goes with. Every so often I will turn on my computer, it will boot, and not display a splash screen. I changed boot parameters in /etc/default/grub to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="drm.debug=0x4 plymouth:debug" It will boot and display a mess of startup text like normal. It will then pause for a second, the text on the screen will change (I think it is switching resolutions), it will flicker and die. I get a black but active screen. The LED on the monitor doesn't denote inactivity but active and black. Here is the output of /var/log/plymouth- debug.log. I turned on debugging and had to reboot 4 times before the screen wasn't black. This bug is almost always reproducible. Oh, of more interesting note, I added nomodeset to the startup but that played havoc with unity. I had a gray or black bar on the left section of the screen where the application bar hides and nothing could overwrite it fully. I could have a cursor light up a few characters in this section but withdrawing the window from this section turned it back to solid gray. However, it did boot flawlessly.
