Xorg freeze or more likely a kernel problem

Usual startup with stable onscreen video
Observed:
Immediately after a system update last week that included going from kernel
xxx.25 to xxx.26 the video became unstable. At start-up the cursor will blink
in the upper left corner and won't respond to any input. Switching back to
kernel xxx.25 brings back the usual stability. Switching to kernel xxx.19,
which came on the installation .iso is also unstable. Sometimes plugging in an
external monitor will produce a temporarily stable video, but within 10 minutes
the system degrades to instability. Unplugging the monitor will usually bring
the laptop screen back to life, but again only temporarily.
I don't have enough Internet bandwidth to do kernel bisections, but
will be happy to pursue this if needed.
