I'm not sure if this was fixed in 10.04, but I am using 13.04 and this is no longer an issue.

My main screen is 1024x768 and my external monitor is 1280x1024. When used in this setup none of video player can play videos (main screen and external). If I set my external monitor to 1024x768 - same as laptop screen, then I can play videos on both screens without a problem.
