A Dasgupta, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
[i915] X crashes upon removal of kernel module psmouse

Status in “xorg-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  [Problem]

When the kernel module psmouse is removed via the command "modprobe -r
psmouse",
X often crashes immediately. This is observed on an ASUS eeepc 1215p with
intel
graphics and synaptics touchpad running Precise 12.04 (released version).

  [Discussion]

There is not much in the logs and by diffing Xorg.0.log immediately before
and after
  the crash I see:

[ 2943.744] SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Read error No such device
  [ 2943.746] (II) config/udev: removing device SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad

Also by diffing dmesg/syslog, I see:

  Apr 29 20:23:15 eps kernel: [ 146.700041] atl1c 0000:01:00.0: vpd r/w
failed. This is likely a firmware bug on this device. Contact the card vendor
for a firmware update.

The log files as well as output of lspci are given in the attachment.
