X crashes multiple times every day for no apparent reason

Bug description:
For about a week now, my screen has been freezing several times a day
and has stopped taking keyboard or mouse input, forcing me to restart
my system by hitting the power button. Normally when I hard reboot I
have to hold the power button for several seconds, but in this case I
just have to push it once briefly and the system goes down for reboot.
Most of the time when it has happened I've been viewing photos using
Shotwell, although it happens with other applications as well.
