Hi,
After upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10 my PC stopped booting into the login
screen, but instead showed that failsafe X has to be used because my
video driver could not be detected. As I checked later, the 13.10 live
CD was giving me the same symptom right from the start.
I managed to work around it by adding the following to xorg
configuration:

and it started booting, but now shows corrupted font as seen in the
attached image. The graphics card is not top-notch, but it worked in
the 13.04 release (albeit only in gnome mode with no effects) and the
font was rendered correctly.
