toddh, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com /daily-live/current/ .
If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful. Thank you for your understanding. Using ctrl+alt+r e i s u b can generally reboot. Otherwise shutting down the laptop requires a hard shutdown holding the power button for about five seconds. This problem is also triggered with ctrl+alt+f1, or if the processor nears a critical temperature and computer immediately attempts shutdown sequence. The nexus of the issue was during a double upgrade from intrepid 8.10 to jaunty 9.04 to karmic 9.10. While troubleshooting, I also completed the upgrade to grub2. My initial intuition, which is still holding out, is that there are some display driver changes that need to take place. Might you see something that could resolve this system hang and fix display issues? If more info would help, share commands for fastest response.
