Title:
KMS & radeon in Lucid renders X unusable, but only since about April
  26

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-ati” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: xorg

I used the Lucid beta for a few weeks with no problems. Last Wednesday
(4/26), however, I did an upgrade, and when I rebooted there was a
serious problem with X. The symptom is that the screen only displays
the Lucid background image, but shifted up and to the side, and a big
corrupt-looking square where the mouse is. There is a photo attached
which displays this behavior. The mouse can be moved, and is tracked
by the square made of vertical lines, but that's all you get out of
  the graphical display.

I was able at the time to ctrl+alt+f* to get to a terminal. There, I saw a
lot of output like this:
  May 2 01:10:24 lucy kernel: [ 262.116824] [drm:radeon_ib_schedule] *ERROR*
radeon: couldn't schedule IB(7).
  May 2 01:10:24 lucy kernel: [ 262.117408] [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR*
Faild to schedule IB !
  May 2 01:10:24 lucy kernel: [ 262.120836] [drm:radeon_ib_schedule] *ERROR*
radeon: couldn't schedule IB(8).
  May 2 01:10:24 lucy kernel: [ 262.121312] [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR*
Faild to schedule IB !
  May 2 01:10:24 lucy kernel: [ 262.122706] [drm:radeon_ib_schedule] *ERROR*
radeon: couldn't schedule IB(9).
  May 2 01:10:24 lucy kernel: [ 262.123198] [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR*
Faild to schedule IB !
  May 2 01:10:24 lucy kernel: [ 262.127764] [drm:radeon_ib_schedule] *ERROR*
radeon: couldn't schedule IB(10).

(Except that this is copied from my syslog today. The errors are the
  same, though.)

Suspecting some new Lucid weirdness, I tried disabling KMS on that
installation, and it didn't seem to help, but I may have none it wrong
or incompletely. I also tried updating again, no luck. So I waited
until the official release of Lucid, and did a fresh install to a
formated "/" (I kept /home, but since the system becomes unusable at
the login screen, I sort of doubt there's relevant cruft there).

I also could not get the live cd to work until I specified nomodeset
in the startup menu. Once I had a fresh installation, I saw the same
problem, but this time adding "options radeon modeset=0" to
  /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf restored usability.

Final fun fact: I can get to a terminal with ctrl+alt+f1 if I start up with
modeset enabled. But if I follow the wiki instructions for trying KMS and do "
  sudo stop gdm
  sudo modprobe -r radeon drm
  sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1
  sudo start gdm
" then I can't get back to a terminal, and have to do a hard reset.
