David Faure, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com /daily-live/current/ .
If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-video-ati REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER Please note, given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful. Thank you for your understanding. I tried with no xorg.conf file at all, same thing. From an ssh session I tried X -configure, and the same thing is happening: X just hangs while trying to start. Pressing Ctrl+C says xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call Not sure what this means though. The videocard is ATI Technologies Inc RV515 [Radeon X1300], and it was using radeon driver, back when it was working ( in fact I still have the Xorg.log from before the lucid upgrade: http://www.davidfaure.fr/2010/Xorg.0.log.ok.before.lucid ) No idea what it's doing now, since it hangs almost right away, even in failsafe mode. So I suppose this isn't video-driver related...
