Körner, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com /daily-live/current/ .

After investigating the forums I successfully managed to handle the problem in two steps: 1. In etc/default/grub add the string ' radeon.modeset=1' - without the ' of course - (for kernel mode setting ON) after "quiet splash" within the quotes to the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=..., save, and run 'sudo update-grub' afterwards. 2. (More important:) In the Login Screen change settings to "ubuntu classic (no effects)". After the next boot the screen display worked fine as it did before in ubuntu 10.10 with the elder radeon driver loaded by announcing it in a changed xorg.conf file.
